The Independence Hurdles

There is no doubt that the UK is heading on a downward spiral with: an incompetent right-wing Prime Minister in charge, the economy in peril as we (possibly) crash out of the Single Market & Customs Union and a Westminster government power grab. In Scotland we have a get out of jail free card in the form of achieving independence, but we have some hurdles to overcome before we achieve it.

OmniBrexitShambles

So, you think the Brexit situation is complex. Nope! It is actually very simple. In fact, Bill Clinton had the answer way back in 1992: "It's the economy, stupid". The central issue with the Brexit negotiations is the Single Market and the UK's continuing access to it after withdrawal from EU membership. That's it, in a nutshell. It is the UK's single largest market and without it the UK economy will get worse, a lot worse.

Scotland the dump

Fantastic piece of research by Andy Arthur and published by Bella Caledonia, but it does make for very depressing reading. The map, shown above, indicates all the locations where military munitions and atomic waste have been dumped in Scotland. Something to be filed away and used for campaigning in the future (or perhaps now).

Political silly season continues

A couple of articles in today's Mirror exemplifies the struggle newspapers have to fill their politics sections while the parliaments are in recess. It's not that there aren't topics that could be discussed, it is just that these either don't fit the newspapers' agenda or they consider them to lack entertainment value.

Forty-two

The answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything is 42. We know this from the excellent book (subsequently made into a radio series, TV series and film) The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams1.

Close shaves and salutes

As the dust settles on the 2017 General Election campaign, we find that the most right wing Tory government ever is to be replaced by the same bunch but this time held in place by the Democratic Unionist Party. That is a depressing outcome for anyone wanting to see progressive politics prosper in Scotland, and the UK.

The willing accomplices

If this general election campaign is remembered for anything it will be the Tories complete inability to engage with the public or the media. This lack of engagement is exemplified by Theresa May's vacuous so called public meetings. Long gone are the days when Tory leaders would go on walkabouts in town high streets where they could actually meet the public. Instead, we are treated to mock events filled with the party faithful brandishing expensively printed posters with the current in-vogue CCHQ sanctioned slogans. The events are always in out of the way locations where access can be easily controlled and the media are sworn to secrecy.

Run it up the flagpole

Just over a week ago, and prior to the 2017 council elections, I was perusing our Twitter timeline when I noticed the Tweet shown below.

Brexit won't work

Who says Brexit won't work?

Well, Theresa May actually. Here are her actual words less than one year ago:

Emptying the pool

As a Yes supporter, and activist, I often feel that combating the anti-independence lies and deceptions is like emptying a swimming pool using a teaspoon, you'll get there eventually but it takes an awful long time. It isn't that our arguments are poor or that we don't have the skills to present them, it is just that we don't have access to the means of mass communication. No sooner do we make some progress than the mainstream media turn on their taps and the pool rapidly fills again.
