It will be difficult for anyone not to be aware that today marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War as the mainstream media, encouraged by Westminster politicians, are devoting so much time and space to it.
Of course, the UK has been involved in some war in every decade since 1919.
My grandfather, Archibald MacDonald, was a soldier in the First World War spending a considerable time in the trenches. He was one of the lucky ones as he survived but it was a close run thing. One day while he was standing looking across No Man's land he started yawning and at that very moment a bullet, or it may have been shrapnel, went through his open mouth and exited through his cheek. Had my grandfather not been yawning he may not have survived.
This was the only war time story that my grandfather would speak about and only then because I used to ask why he had a scar on his cheek. I can say with some certainty that my grandfather wouldn't have agreed with David Cameron.
"Our ambition is a truly national commemoration, worth of this historic centenary. I want a commemoration that captures our national spirit, in every corner of the country, from our schools to our workplaces, to our town halls and local communities. A commemoration that, like the Diamond Jubilee celebrated this year, says something about who we are as a people."
David Cameron"Only a moron would celebrate war."
Jeremy Paxman"a bayonet is a weapon with a working man at either end"
John Maclean"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."
Albert Einstein
