After a week long referendum in the Veneto region residents have overwhelmingly voted to regain their independence reports The Telegraph. Out of 2.36 million votes cast 2.1 million were in favour of independence or nearly 89%. Veneto roughly equates to the area of the Venetian Republic which was an independent state for more than 1,000 years until it was incorporated into the Austrian Empire and then into the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
The vote which took place in local polling stations and online does not have legal force but it will give the parties supporting independence great encouragement. Veneto independence supporters have said a regional law to create a formal binding referendum is being formulated.
Interestingly, it was reported that the referendum organisers were inspired to hold the vote because of the independence movements in Scotland and Catalonia. Attendees at the 2012 and 2013 March & Rally events couldn't have failed to see the large contingent from Veneto waving the red and gold Lion of Saint Mark flags.
Surely a story about a small northern state with a vibrant economy and a population of about 5 million voting overwhelmingly to regain its independence would be splashed across all the media in Scotland. No, of course not!
